Abstract

Due to the passing of Spanish laws which promoted the creation urban cartography and the need to rearrange an overcrowded city, the Barcelona City Council commissioned in 1856 the creation of a municipal plan to the architect Miquel Garriga i Roca. During the following six years he created what has been known as the Plan of Barcelona, a collection of cartographic products which depict with previously unknown levels of detail how Barcelona was before the demolition of the city walls. This paper explains how and why the maps were commissioned, how they were made and the cartographic outputs which were produced as a result.
