Abstract

This article takes as its subject the educational philosophy of the writer and schoolmaster (Henry) Caldwell Cook (1886 – 1939) whose work on drama and the subsequent development of a practical system of dramatic learning for children was enshrined both within his key text of 1917 The Play Way but also through his widely-recognized practices at the Perse School in Cambridge, UK. In particular the paper will seek to locate and explore the distinctiveness of Cook’s work in relation to his contemporaries chiefly those others who used drama as a form of pedagogy.
