Abstract

The attached list of publications and the reprints are submitted to the University of Keele in support of the application by H.Heaney (B.A., Keele, Ph.D., Manchester) for the award of the degree of Doctor of Science. In the papers (1)--(8) and (12) the applicant was a junior author and only the experimental work may be ascribed to this author. This work formed the basis for the submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy of the University of Manchester. In addition the applicant did not initiate the work reported in papers (11) and (22).

The work reported in the remaining papers was initiated by the applicant and was carried out in collaboration with the research students and colleagues whose names appear on the papers.

The majority of the original work presented has been concerned with synthetic and mechanistic aspects of the chemistry of arynes. Initially the work centred on reactions of benzyne and simple substituted benzynes particularly in the synthesis of substituted triphenylenes. However, the majority of the work has been concerned with reactions of highly halogenated arynes [reviewed in paper (50)], particularly with aromatic compounds. The change in emphasis was a direct result of the increase in the electrophilic character of the tetrahalogenobenzynes as compared with benzyne [paper (13)]. That four halogens are necessary to this reactivity was shown [paper (24)] and certain reactions of the tetrahalogeno-benzynes are not observed in reactions of benzyne [papers (35) and (43)].

A number of other research lines are logical developments of the main research. Thus the observation of pronounced "long-range l9F-lH spin-spin coupling in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of certain products obtained from reactions of tetrafluorobenzyne, led to an in interest in long-range coupling and restricted rotation
