Abstract

Pogramme Notes Johann and Eric for bass clarinet and electronics, written for the renown British bass clarinettist Sarah Watts, is a tribute to the legendary jazz saxophonist and bass clarinettist, Eric Dolphy. His music thought was influenced by many transcriptions of other music, including bits of Charlie Parker’s, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s. As a tribute to him, Johann and Eric is ‘infused’ with phrases from both his solos, and from Bach’s music. The piece, features some extended bass clarinet techniques (multiphonics in particular), and software-manipulated bass clarinet sounds. Fixed Media All the soundfiles are in non-compressed format (AIFF or WAV). Which of the two versions will be used depends on both the hardware and software available at the performance venue. The soundfiles should be played back from a computer using the standalone Performance Application distributed along with the score. They can be triggered by using the computer’s mouse or keyboard.
